My Story – Part 1: I Quit!

It was March 8, 2017. I had been working in “corporate America” for almost a decade. When I started my job there I LOVED it. I had an amazing boss who treated me really well. I was making a decent salary. Life was great. I moved up in the company, got my clearance and worked really hard to become PMP certified. I got two raises in 2 years. My reviews were great and clients asked for me by name. As time went on I also got married and had two children.
By international women’s day 2017, I had not received a raise in 7 years despite having been promised one for 5. “No one was receiving raises” was all I kept being told. That day they announced the first raises in 5 years. I did not get one. My boss said “I submitted you that’s all I could do”
I realized in that moment, on intentional women’s day, that it was all a sham. You can’t be a wife, a mom and a business women in America. It’s impossible. Mitch started at the same time I did, was hired for slightly less than I was, had the same job title I had, had the same clearance I had, was not PMP certified (he is now), did work for a different company but in the same industry….and on this day, he was making $40,000 more than I was making. I was told regularly that I shouldn’t be taking time off to take the kids to doctors appointments because “don’t your parents watch your kids? Can’t they take them?” None of it was acceptable.
I told them that I needed the raise I had been promised or I was leaving. I was told if I could come with an offer from another company maybe the could match it. My bosses boss set up a meeting with me and when he didn’t show and I asked if I “should assume that means I’m not getting a raise” I was told “you should assume I got busy and couldn’t make it”.
So, I quit. I was already making more with LuLaRoe than I was making at my corporate job and I was my own boss. I made my own hours. I didn’t have to ask anyone’s permission to take my kids to the doctors or request time off for field trips.
So today, 7 years later, I am living the life I want to live. In direct sales of all things. Where I am able to be my own boss. I would like to celebrate all the women in my life who are also living the life they want to live, you’re the real Bosses!
